Philippe Courtial joined the EGU in 2010 as the executive secretary in order to build up a new EGU office in Munich after it was decided to re-locate the headquarter of the Union. He is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Union together with the EGU office staff, manages the EGU office, assists the various Council members in their activities and liaises with them, assures the communication with the partner Unions of EGU, and handles the promotion of the Union.
Before joining EGU, Philippe did his habilitation in mineralogy at the mineralogy section of the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich. In addition to his own research programme, he was responsible for the running of various laboratories. Prior to this, he was a post-doc at the Bayerisches Geoinstitut, Bayreuth, and before that he completed his PhD at the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris on the physico-chemical and thermodynamic properties of silicate melts. Philippe has also done a 6-month training programme on business economics and project management.
