Statement on scientific presentations at the EGU General Assembly
20 February 2018
The General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union is the largest and most prominent Earth, planetary and space sciences meeting in Europe. It regularly welcomes over 14,000 participants from around the world, taking part in nearly 1000 scientific sessions, short courses and side events.
At the core of the scientific discussions at the meeting are the over 17,000 abstracts presented at the EGU General Assembly, in the form of poster, oral and PICO (Presenting Interactive COntent) presentations. Over the last few years, two-thirds of the abstracts were presented as a poster and one-third as oral or PICO.
With this statement, the EGU stresses that all scientific presentations at its General Assembly have equal importance, independent of format. There is no distinction regarding the standing, quality or prestige of oral, poster, or PICO presentations. Our different presentation formats offer different ways to present research and obtain feedback. In all cases, a presenter is expected to deliver the main message of the research orally and discuss their results with other participants at the meeting.
