EGU celebrates the first Early Career Scientist to be elected as a Division President
28 April 2025
EGU’s Division Presidents are volunteers with a complicated and important role, that can shape the focus of the field highlighting important research and providing a critically important support network for European researchers, and researchers around the world. This year for the first time, at EGU25, Giorgia Stasi, an Early Career Scientist, will take on this task after being elected the President of the Energy, Resources and Environment (ERE) Division.
Giorgia Stasi, who is also a PhD candidate in Applied Geophysics at the University of Liège and a geologist at the Institute of Natural Sciences in Belgium, in the Geological Survey department, is the first EGU member and volunteer to serve as an Early Career Scientist Representative, and then be elected to be a Division President, whist still in their Early Career stage. The Division President position involves a lot of work co-ordinating the vast topic areas that make up EGU’s annual General Assembly; being a representative for all researchers in the Division; and acting as advocate for research in the field of the division’s focus, when choosing the direction of the Union as a whole. As such this job has usually been accepted by scientists in their mid-career or senior career stage.
Giorgia, who has been involved with EGU for many years, is excited by the challenges that the role will bring, but also the opportunities to shape the future of the Energy, Resources and Environment Division on the world stage. “Having been a member of EGU for a few years, I know the value of the Division Presidents job and although I’m very aware of the challenges of balancing the workload with my day job, I’m lucky to have the support of the ERE team and count on the talented and experienced people on the EGU Council. I’m looking forward to continuing the growth of the ERE Division, which has increased in size a lot over the last few years, but to keep it sustainable, and to create more ways for our division members to interact – we all know how easy it can be to get lost in the topics, but as one of the most interdisciplinary divisions, I think this interaction is essential.”
The current Division President Viktor Bruckman, a researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, has supported Giorgia’s nomination and progress, is pleased to see that the Energy, Resources and Environment Division is continuing to innovate for the EGU community. “I am very proud that the ERE Division has achieved a ‘first’ for EGU and hope that this sends a motivating signal to the entire EGU community, over 50% of which are Early Career Scientists. I am really looking forward to the next few years as the ERE Division goes from strength to strength, both with Giorgia’s leadership and the support of our whole extremely motivated team.”
After stepping down as Division President Viktor Bruckman will remain as Vice-President until the next election later in 2025. Learn more about EGU’s election process and the role that the Division Presidents play on our website.
