EGU are looking to hire a Science for Policy Officer (maternity cover) to work within EGU’s existing Policy Programme, which supports evidence-informed policymaking by empowering EGU members to engage in the policymaking process, providing accurate, relevant, timely, and actionable scientific information to policymakers, and strengthening Europe’s science-policy ecosystem. The Officer will be tasked supporting EGU’s existing science for policy initiatives, mapping out policy opportunities for the EGU, building and maintaining links between EGU members and European decision makers, and facilitating training and networking events for scientists to engage with policy.

The officer will be based at the EGU Executive Office in Munich, Germany, with occasional travel to Brussels required. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the EGU Executive Secretary and the EGU Head of Communications starting in April-May 2025 for a fixed term of 18 months (maternity cover).

Main tasks:

  • Researching and summarising EU legislation and EU policy news for EGU members who may be interested in sharing their expertise
  • Supporting EGU Task Forces with their policy impact by facilitating meetings, supporting the creation of policy briefs, and disseminating information to policymakers
  • Assisting with science for policy initiatives such as the EGU’s Science-Policy Pairing Scheme, EGU’s Science for Policy events, the EGU Science for Policy Award, and the EGU-IEEP Policy Mentoring Scheme
  • Measuring the impact of EGU’s science for policy initiatives and policy engagement
  • Supporting science for policy webinars and sessions at EGU’s General Assembly
  • Creating and disseminating content relating to the EGU’s Policy Programme

Requirements:

  • A postgraduate degree (e.g. MA, MSc), preferably in the geosciences or related scientific disciplines or in governance or public policy
  • Experience in communicating with policymakers
  • A strong understanding of EU policymaking landscape and processes
  • Ability to understand and translate complex science into simple concepts
  • Willingness to work as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills
  • Expert command of English

Salary and starting date:
This position, to start in April-May 2025, is for a fixed term of 18 months and will be subject to a 6-month probation period and is a full-time appointment (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be entitled to 30 vacation days per calendar year in addition to public holidays in Bavaria, will benefit from German statutory health insurance and the company pension scheme and will contribute to compulsory pension insurance. The successful candidate will be asked to relocate to Munich as soon as it is feasible to do so. We offer a competitive salary, and indicative remuneration will be in the range of €44,000 – €51,000 subject to expertise and experience.
