Sediment core from the study area
Photograph of the topmost part of a sediment core retrieved from the study area, representing approximately the last 100 years of sediment accumulation. Severe oxygen depletion has resulted in disappearance of bottom-dwelling animals from the seafloor, which has inhibited biological sediment mixing and enabled preservation of the bedded sediment structure.
