Position description
The Geosciences Research Division (GRD) within the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body, and invites applications from qualified individuals for a Project Scientist for an open search.
The Geosciences Research Division seeks to hire one Project Scientist in the following area:
*MC-ICPMS instrumentation and clean lab management
The candidate is responsible for effectively working within a research team and collaborating with colleagues outside UCSD while demonstrating the capacity to work autonomously. They will join an active research group of geochemists currently at SIO and assist with the management of the newly completed Scripps Geochemical Research Lab-a metal-free clean lab and multi collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) instrumentation.
The Project Scientist will be responsible for providing daily support in the clean lab and MC-ICPMS facilities with tasks including management of laboratory logistics, instrument maintenance, training, and troubleshooting as well as the development of new analytical techniques. The successful applicant will work with faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars. The successful applicant should have 2+ years of hands-on experience with MC-ICPMS instrumentation and experience supervising student lab assistants.
At UC San Diego, Project Scientists are academic researchers who are expected to make significant and creative contributions to a research team, but may not necessarily be a leader of a research team. They are not required to carry out independent research or develop an independent research reputation, but will publish and carry out research under the supervision of a member of the Professor or Professional Research series.
We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated excellence in research and service, and who are committed toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. A competitive record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to contribute to the success of an active research program consistent with the appointment level, is required. Candidates will be considered at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist levels.
All positions are subject to availability of funding. Positions in areas other than those listed above may become available at a later date.
Review of applications will continue until the position is filled based on the on-going needs of the Geosciences Research Division.
