Job description

The Geological Survey of Finland is looking for a research scientist/senior scientist in the field of ambient noise seismology. You will work in the Geophysical Solutions Unit in the Ores and Bedrock team consisting of 12 geoscientists working on diverse disciplines in the field of geophysics. Your office is in Espoo, Rovaniemi or Kuopio and you can also work remotely partially in Finland. We consciously advance the diversity and equality of our staff, so we encourage many kinds of people from diverse backgrounds to apply for our positions. Our work community is made up of more than 20 different nationalities, which is one example of our diversity.

You are expected to apply and develop passive seismic methods utilizing ambient noise in both the bedrock (e.g. mineral exploration, geoenergy) and the near-surface (e.g. groundwater, construction) studies. Project leading and research funding application responsibilities are included in your tasks. Depending on your experience and skills, you may also be responsible for major international research projects and funding applications.

You will be using both already existing data as well as participating in planning, designing, and implementing new passive seismic studies. GTK as a member of the FINNSIP seismic pool has access to 1100 3C short period and 45 broad-band instruments. Utilizing pool devices is part of your work. Planning and coordinating the field measurement, quality control, data processing, reporting and presenting results to clients and stakeholders are part of your job.

Education, experience and skills expected of an applicant

  • We expect you to have a master’s degree in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics or related field
  • You have experience in processing passive seismic data for structural imaging (e.g., ambient noise tomography) and/or monitoring (e.g., coda wave interferometry)
  • You have experience in using seismological data analysis software such as ObsPy, MSNoise, etc.
  • You have skills in scientific programming
  • You have proven ability to publish scientific articles on relevant topics in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • You are fluent in both written and spoken English
  • You are willing to participate in the fieldwork and traveling both in Finland and internationally

Education, experience and skills that are appreciated

  • PhD on a relevant topic
  • Experience in using high-performance computing resources and/or cloud computing
  • Experience in machine learning assisted analysis of seismological data
  • Experience with research topics falling into the field of environmental seismology
  • Experience in analysis of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data
  • Experience with research funding acquisition

Personal qualities desired from the applicant

As a person you are proactive and can work independently, but teamwork also comes naturally to you. You are passionate about learning new things. You have a structured and organized working style and have good prioritization skills.

The position is fixed term. The starting date is 1.5.2025 or by agreement. The term is for 3 years. The position includes a probationary period. The position of a senior scientist requires a doctoral degree.
