Professor position in atmospheric sciences at Université du Québec at Montréal
University of Quebec at Montreal
Climate: Past, Present & Future (CL)
Hydrological Sciences (HS)
IN THE DEPARTMENT OF EARTH AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES
PROFESSOR POSITION IN HYDROMETEOROLOGY AND SEVERE WEATHER
UQAM is seeking qualified candidates to renew its faculty and ensure quality development in all its fields of activity.
The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is seeking applications for a tenure-track professor position in atmospheric science. We are seeking candidates with experience in hydrometeorology and severe weather, through work based on instrumentation, real-time monitoring, exploitation of large meteorological databases, and very high-resolution modeling, among other things. This position aims to complement the academic training offer at all cycles in atmospheric sciences and to develop a research program focused on hydrometeorology and severe weather phenomena (e.g., tornadoes, torrential rains, strong winds and hail). Since hydrometeorology is a field at the heart of several concerns related to adaptation to climate change, the candidate will participate in training in atmospheric sciences, as well as in research work at UQAM on the links between climate change, hydrological processes and extreme weather phenomena.
The Department offers training programs in atmospheric sciences at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles. It hosts the Centre for the Study and Simulation of Climate at the Regional Scale (ESCER), which is internationally recognized for its research contributions in the fields of regional climate modeling, Earth-atmosphere interactions and feedbacks, extreme winter weather events, hydrometeorological risks, paleoclimate modeling, the impact of aerosols on climate, urban climate and atmospheric remote sensing. The ESCER Centre actively participates in the Quebec Intersectoral Flood Network (RIISQ) and collaborates with, among others, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the Ouranos consortium.
SUMMARY OF THE FUNCTION:
- Teaching atmospheric sciences at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles
- Participation in research in the targeted field and supervision of students
- Community services
REQUIREMENTS:
- Hold a doctorate in atmospheric sciences, hydrometeorology or a related field
- Demonstrate an interest in training and teaching at the three university cycles
- Be able to develop an ambitious research program in the targeted field
- Have a good record of research and publications in peer-reviewed journals
in the targeted field - Mastery of the French language, both orally and in writing.
ASSETS:
- Have experience in teaching atmospheric sciences
- Have experience in instrumentation and have contributed to measurement campaigns
- Be familiar with the modeling, parameterizations and diagnostics required for hydrometeorology and the study of severe weather
- Have an interest in watershed hydrology and the water cycle as a whole
START DATE: JULY 1, 2025 (subject to required authorizations)
SALARY: According to the UQAM-SPUQ collective agreement
Concerned about being representative of Quebec society and determined to enrich itself through its diversity, the University invites all qualified individuals to submit their applications, particularly women, Indigenous people, members of visible and ethnic minorities, as well as persons with disabilities in relation to the Equal Access to Employment Program. Individuals from these groups are invited to self-identify when submitting their application by sending the identification questionnaire https://rh.uqam.ca/qaccesegalite/, mentioning the title of the position in the subject line, to the following address: edi@uqam.ca.
In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority must be given to individuals with the necessary authorizations to work in Canada. This criterion is not a priority within the meaning of the applicable collective agreements.
Interested persons must send their application by email to saumur.benoit@uqam.ca with a copy to beauchemin.france@uqam.ca, in a single PDF file including a cover letter, a detailed, dated and signed curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests (maximum 3 pages), and a statement on the philosophy of teaching (maximum 1 page). Three letters of recommendation supporting your application must also be sent directly from the referees and sent electronically to the same addresses, all BEFORE January 31, 2025, at 5 p.m.
