Job description

We invite motivated outstanding candidates to apply for the Boya Postdoctoral Fellowships at the School of Earth and Space Sciences at Peking University (PKU) or national postdoc fellowships. The multiple positions can be supported by funded projects too. Applicants with an interest in seismology or interdisciplinary interests are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Boya fellowship is for a period of 2 years and includes a salary that commensurate with experience (200,000-400,000 RMB/year or annual 27,000-54,000 Euros or US$30,000-63,000), plus subsidized housing or a housing subsidy (60,000 RMB/year), plus medical and social insurance, which allows a high standard of living in Beijing. After completion of the fellowship, suitable postdocs may have the opportunity to transition into a senior researcher position.

For the fellowship, applicants below the age of 35 who obtained their PhDs within the last 3 years are eligible to apply. There are fewer restrictions for positions related to funded projects.

While the fellowship is a personal fellowship to the candidate and therefore allows to follow own research interests, we are particularly keen to hearing from applicants interested in contributing to one of the following areas:

Seismology, Deep Earth Studies, and Earthquake Studies: We are particularly interested in the following topics. (1) Studies of Earth’s deep interior (mantle and core), primarily with seismological methods. (2) High-resolution imaging of earth structure and regional tectonics (esp. on east Asia). (3) Fault zone fine structure and earthquake source processes and physics. (4) Developments and applications of new techniques, e.g., machine learning, DAS, array processing, joint inversions.

Funded projects: Project-related positions will focus mainly on the following three major national projects that have been funded. (1) Key project related to fault zone structure and big earthquakes. (2) Key project on interdisciplinary studies of the Earth’s core. (3) Key project on Asia lithosphere structure and tectonics.

Successful applicants are to work primarily with Prof. Xiaodong Song and are encouraged to collaborate with other PKU faculty members and with other team members at Southern University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, the SinoProbe Lab of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and Institutes at China Earthquake Administration and Chinese Academy of Sciences.

How to apply

The positions remain open until filled. The deadline for the PKU fellowship is normally early March or early October and the next deadline for the Spring is early March, 2025. Candidates are encouraged to contact us early. Please contact Ms. Diana Wu at lywu@pku.edu.cn for general information and to submit preliminary application materials including a CV and a short statement of research interests. For discussion of research projects, contact Prof. Xiaodong Song (xiao.d.song@gmail.com). Information about Prof. Song’s research available at web sites below:
