Job description

I am offering several fully-funded PhD positions to join research projects at the intersection of geophysics, tectonics, seismic imaging, and resource exploration. These projects are based at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia, with opportunities for international collaboration and hands-on fieldwork.

The research focuses on imaging the Earth’s lithosphere using advanced geophysical techniques, including seismic tomography and magnetotelluric surveys. The positions are ideal for motivated and proactive researchers eager to work on multidisciplinary projects with real-world applications in mineral and geothermal exploration, as well as fundamental Earth science questions.

Projects Overview
Magnetotelluric Surveys for Large-Scale Lithospheric Imaging: Collaborate with a large Saudi exploration company to acquire magnetotelluric data across the country and produce 3D resistivity models of the lithosphere across Saudi Arabia, advancing the understanding of large-scale geological structures and target potential areas for mineral exploration.
Surface-Wave Tomography of the Arabian Plate: this project involves extended research stays in Cambridge, working alongside Prof. Lebedev, to develop a comprehensive surface-wave tomography model of the Arabian plate.
Ambient Noise Seismic Tomography: develop 3D shear-wave velocity models of prospective areas for mineral and geothermal exploration using field-collected data. Hands-on fieldwork is integral to this project, providing rare expertise in a rapidly growing field.

Your Profile
A Master’s degree in geophysics, geology, physics, computer science, or a related field.
Strong quantitative and analytical skills with an interest in geophysical methods and modeling.
Programming experience (e.g., Python, MATLAB), or be ready to learn.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international research environment.
English proficiency and a high GPA (as per KFUPM requirements, detailed below).

Please note that KFUPM will offer stipend, free accommodation, VIP health insurance, subsidised meals at the canteen and one return ticket to your home country for the summer. If this sounds interesting, please get in touch with me.

How to apply

Please check you meet the requirements at the following link:
https://bulletin.kfupm.edu.sa/program?program_id=157&title=doctor-of-philosophy-in-geophysics

It basically requires an English language certificate and a high GPA.

The call for PhD scholarships is now open and can be accessed at https://cgis.kfupm.edu.sa
Deadline for applications is on December 12, for a start in August 2025 (outcome around March 2025).
