Two Graduate Positions in Earthquake Seismology
University of Ottawa
The University of Ottawa is a diverse, bilingual university with more than 550 programs in 10 faculties. Students can study everything from fine arts to hard sciences in French, English or both. The university has an extensive co-op program boasting a 96 percent placement rate. Students find opportunities in government offices, research institutions and health centres in the nation’s capital. The school’s co-curricular uOGlobal recognition program helps students develop employment skills valued worldwide.
As part of its growth and development plan, the University of Ottawa opened the Advanced Research Complex; it houses the Centre for Research in Photonics, several geoscience laboratories and the only accelerator mass spectrometer in Canada. In 2018, the university opened three new buildings: a STEM-focused complex, a theatre and the Learning Crossroads, a space dedicated to active learning and teaching innovation. The campus blends well into the city’s urban core. Academic buildings and dorms are not far from a coffee shop or a decent place to eat, and the nearby Rideau Centre is the city’s best place to go for mainstream shopping.
The University of Ottawa and the Geophysics Group are committed to diversity and equity in employment (https://www.uottawa.ca/research-innovation/equity-diversity-inclusion). We encourage applications from women, indigenous people, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, persons of minority sexual orientation or gender identity, visible minorities, and others who may contribute to diversity. The two positions are fully funded through NSERC grants, which offer financial support for parental leaves and extension of the degree.

Seismology (SM)
The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Ottawa, Canada, invites applications to fill two fully funded graduate positions (Ph.D. or M.Sc.) in the uOttawa Geophysics group. The students will work on projects related to the study of lithosphere structure and dynamics at the Hikurangi (New Zealand) and Cascadia (western Canada) subduction zones. Projects may involve seismic data collection at sea using arrays of broadband ocean-bottom seismic instruments from the NFSI and other facilities. The successful candidates will be expected to design and implement data processing tools combined with modern, statistical learning-based methods to investigate the seismicity and seismic velocity structure of the lithosphere.
Eligibility
Ph.D. position
- Completed M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Geophysics, Geosciences, Physics, Civil or Mining Engineering or related fields
- Open to international or domestic students
M.Sc. position
- Completed B.Sc. (or equivalent) in Geophysics, Geosciences, Physics, Civil or Mining Engineering or related fields, with the possibility to fast-track to the Ph.D. program
- Open to Canadian students or permanent residents of Canada
Necessary Qualifications or Skills:
- Good written and spoken English and/or French
- Programming experience is an asset
Tasks:
- Developing and testing methodologies for building earthquake catalogues and seismic velocity models at plate boundaries using broadband seismic data
- Evaluating, understanding, interpreting and comparing seismicity and seismic velocity models
- Interacting with scientists from different disciplines (collaborators within the project(s)), communicating and disseminating results at conferences and through publications
Program Start Date:
September 2025 or January 2026
Send the following application material as PDF documents before December 9, 2024, to pascal.audet@uottawa.ca:
- One-page cover letter outlining your suitability and motivation for the position and any factors that influenced your ability to perform academically (family responsibilities, medical leaves, etc.)
- Official transcripts
- Full CV outlining education, research experience and contributions, and contact of two referees
Interviews will take place the week of December 16, 2024. The selected applicants will be asked to submit a formal application for either the MSc or PhD program in Earth Sciences at the University of Ottawa before February 1, 2025.
