The applicant will work in the frame of the EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ project SeaDots, “Socio‑Ecological Ocean Management Applications using Digital Ocean Twins”, and aims to supply socio‑ecological and socio‑economic data and models. It will illustrate their application within Digital Ocean Twins by fostering innovation and collaboration across various disciplines and domains. Our initiative will showcase the application of diverse Digital Ocean Twin frameworks and demonstrate the capabilities of digital ocean twins through selected case studies. This will improve the understanding of intricate marine systems, considering their physical, biological, ecological, and economic determinants, aiding in informed policymaking.

The position is initially limited to 32 months.

Your tasks
We are looking for a motivated and eager-to-learn ocean scientist with good programming skills. In SeaDots, the applicant will use coupled modelling frameworks of ocean physics and biogeochemistry developed at Hereon to setup cross-sectorial scenario simulations including climate scenarios and multi-use scenarios. A special endeavor of SeaDots is to also integrate the socio‑economic component into the modelling. The applicant will be trained by our team in state-of-the-art tools and will proceed in close cooperation with the project partners from all over Europe. The position offers an excellent opportunity for an application-oriented entry into Digital Twins, whereby the work within the framework of the EU horizon mission ocean project SeaDots contributes directly to the goals of the European Green Deal Initiative.

Your profile
- a university degree and a PhD in modelling, physics or natural sciences
- a capacity and interest to work in different fields of marine science including physics, biogeochemistry, ecological processes, environmental engineering
- talent for computational scientific work is necessary
- very good written and verbal English communication skills are required
- good communication skills for communicating results to different audience including general public in relation to dissemination activities
