Ghent University is a partner in the Flemish Supercomputer Center, which gives access to HPC infrastructure. Furthermore, each Ghent University staff member can count on a number of benefits such as a bike allowance, reimbursement of public transport commuting costs, daycare, a wide range of sports facilities and EcoCheques.

Ghent University conducts an equal opportunities policy and encourages everyone to apply. Ghent University also strives for a gender balance in which a maximum of 60% of the academic staff with a PhD degree is of the same gender. As long as this goal is not achieved at the level of the group of scientific disciplines involved, the university board will in principle, for positions within this group, give priority to candidates of the underrepresented gender but only in case of equal qualifications of the applicants. This priority is neither automatic nor unconditional; the personal situation of each candidate needs to be taken into consideration in the evaluation at all times.

Job description

The Department of Geology of Ghent University is seeking to appoint a tenure-track research professor in the field of ‘Co-evolution of planet, oceans, climate and life’ to be starting from 1st of February 2025. We are inviting all interested researchers to apply within the next month.

The successful candidate will be expected develop a research program exploring paleoclimate / paleo-environmental proxies based on fossil material. They will be expected to have proven expertise in the collection, analysis and interpretation of paleoclimate data extracted from the micro- or macrofossil archive. We emphasize that we are looking for a colleague knowledgeable in, and capable of combining both paleontology and ((bio)geochemical) proxy data analysis. There is no predefined focus on geological time periods, particular proxies or fossil groups, though we are not seeking to duplicate expertise already existing within the department. While collaboration with climate modelers is certainly possible, this is not a modeling position.

The candidate will have the possibility to establish and lead an independent research group within the department, responsible for defining the exact research direction, mentoring graduate students, and seeking external research funding to support the group’s activities. Core-facilities available at the university and the departmental infrastructure can of course be used to expand scientific research.

Our new colleague will be joining the department at an interesting time, as it is currently reorganizing its teaching curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the educational programme in the Bachelor and Master in Geology, respectively featuring modules in basic and advanced geology; given the current revision of the program, there will be some flexibility as to the content of modules expected to be taught, especially with regards to the MSc.

The mandate is awarded for a term of five years. Upon favorable evaluation at the end of this period, the position will be converted into a permanent appointment at Associate Professor level.
