Job description

Associate Professor (Tenure Track/ Tenured) in Environmental Data Science

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore seeks to appoint an Associate Professor in Environmental Data Science to be held jointly in both the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and the newly established College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS). We encourage applications from researchers who leverage innovative data science methodologies to address pressing environmental challenges and advance our understanding of natural systems. We are particularly keen to recruit applicants whose research includes quantitative analysis of geoscience, climatologically or environmentally relevant observational data. Examples of areas of interest include but are not limited to environmental geochemistry; geophysics: natural hazards; atmosphere, oceans and climate science: remote sensing; ecological modelling; environmental sustainability; and geospatial analysis. The successful candidate will be expected to build and contribute to interdisciplinary research, teaching and leadership within our institution’s Environmental Earth System Science and AI programmes.

The candidate is expected to lead and conduct high-impact research at the intersection of environmental and Earth system science and data science. We seek candidates who can develop and implement novel data science methodologies, which might include AI and machine learning, deep learning, and data analytics, to analyse environmental and/or Earth observational datasets, model complex environmental systems, and extract actionable insights.

The faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in environment and/or Earth system science, data science and related disciplines, incorporating innovative teaching methods and real-world applications of data science in environmental contexts and supervise graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, providing mentorship and guidance in research design, interpretation, and professional development.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Earth system science, Environmental science, Computer science, Mathematics, Theoretical Physics or a related field and demonstrated expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science, with a strong track record of research publications and external funding. Experience in applying data sciences techniques to address environmental and/or Earth science challenges, such as remote sensing data analysis, climate modeling, or environmental monitoring would be anticipated.

Both ASE and CCDS are diverse, interdisciplinary units that integrates geoscience, environment, ecology, and computational sciences in order to examine environmental challenges in Asia and globally. Researchers can access national computing facilities such as the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore and potentially align with AI Singapore (https://aisingapore.org/).

Both ASE and CCDS seek a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

Emoluments and General Terms & Conditions of Service
The commencing salary will depend on the candidate’s qualifications, experience and the level of appointment offered.

Application Procedure
Candidates are invited to submit their application packages (cover letter, full CV, research and teaching statements, names and contact details of three referees) through the NTU Career Portal, (https://ntu.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/Careers/job/Associate-Professor—Tenure-Track—Tenured—in-Environmental-Data-Science_R00018441) by clicking the ‘APPLY’ button. Applications will be reviewed and shortlisted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

All applications and materials submitted will be held in strict confidence.
