Job description

The Faculty of Environment and Natural Sciences invites applications for a
PROFESSORSHIP (W3)
Hydrology
(Hydrologie)
commencing on April 1st 2026.

The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Environmental Technology of the Faculty of Environment and Natural Sciences at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg (https://www.b-tu.de/en/fakultaet2) invites applications for a full Professorship in Hydrology (W3). The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Environmental Technology is a highly interdisciplinary association of different departments that address current environmental issues in research and teaching. It benefits from close collaboration and joint professorships with external institutions, such as Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), or Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). The topic of water plays a central role at the BTU and in the Lusatia region. The consequences of lignite mining and the changes in the water balance caused by climate change require strategic water management for Lusatia and beyond the region. The new professor will complement the existing expertise in water-related environmental research and work on fundamental environmental issues at the groundwater–surface water–atmosphere interface. The focus will be on ecohydrological processes, the analysis of land use changes and the management of water resources in a changing climate. Applicants are internationally recognized experts in the areas mentioned. The range of methods includes numerical modelling, the application of machine learning methods, the analysis of hydrological environmental data and/or the implementation of field experiments. Applicants have demonstrated their ability to lead a research group and to acquire third-party funding.

A strong commitment to teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s level within the existing study programs ‘Environmental and Resource Management’, ‘Landnutzung und Wasserbewirtschaftung’, and ‘Umweltingenieurwesen’ is expected as well as active participation in the future study program ‘Umweltwissenschaften’. At BTU, undergraduate level courses are generally taught in German and graduate level courses in English. The willingness to teach in both languages is a prerequisite.

We are looking for:

We are looking for a nationally and internationally recognised personality with experience in the fields of hydrology and water management – proven by an outstanding research portfolio and documented experience in teaching. The professorship should represent the above-mentioned fields in research and teaching within the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in German and English. If there is no sufficient knowledge of German, the willingness to learn the German language as quickly as possible is mandatory to allow teaching within the German-language Bachelor’s degree programmes and to be able to contribute to the management of the institute and the faculty and to participate in university and non-university committees. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the departments of the Institute and to actively participate in the planning and establishment of interdisciplinary collaborative research projects and networks as well as their coordination and management at both national (DFG funding programs) and international (EU) level.

Your profile:

As a future professor, you can provide evidence of the following requirements in accordance with § 43 Para. 1 No. 1 to 4a Brandenburg Higher Education Act (BbgHG):

  • a completed university degree in hydrology, environmental engineering, geosciences or a related subject area,
  • pedagogical aptitude,
  • a special aptitude for academic work, as a rule through the outstanding quality of a doctorate on a hydrological subject, and
  • a habilitation or additional academic achievements as an equivalent.

Furthermore, you have experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and in the implemen tation of third-party funded projects, ideally in interdisciplinary networks, whereby experience with DFG and EU projects is particularly desirable. Your university teaching experience enables excellent teaching for the subject area to be filled here. You have the ability to teach at all curricular levels from bachelor’s to doctorate, to supervise theses and to support young academics. Your knowledge and experience enable you to participate in academic self-administration and in raising the profile of the faculty.

We offer:

  • fair and transparent appointment negotiations,
  • attractive working conditions in a city with a high quality of life and in relative proximity to Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig,
  • a dynamically developing research location,
  • support in relocating to the immediate vicinity of your place of employment,
  • comprehensive advice in the dual-career service and in the area of family orientation, and
  • an attractive salary with a negotiable appointment benefit.

Other duties result from the requirements set by § 44 BbgHG in conjunction with § 3 BbgHG. For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Dominik Martin-Creuzburg, Tel. +49 (0)33631 8943 / email: Dominik.Martin-Creuzburg@b-tu.de.

Please refer to §§ 43 paragraph 1 No 1 – 4a and 45 BbgHG for prerequisites and conditions of employment.

BTU is committed to equal opportunities and diversity and strives for a balanced gender ratio in all employee groups. Persons with a severe disability and their equals are given priority in the case of equal suitability.

As a family-oriented University, BTU offers a Dual Career Service.
