Job description

The Institute of Geophysics at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Münster seeks to fill the following position at the earliest possible date:

Professorship (W3‑level) in “Theoretical Geophysics with specialisation in Planetary Fluid Dynamics”

The candidate should be a distinguished researcher with internationally published research work in the field of theoretical geophysics. Their research programme should strengthen, complement and expand the existing activities at the University of Münster in the areas of geophysics and non‑linear physics. The thematic focus of the position lies in the fundamental physical understanding of non‑linear dynamic processes of the Earth’s system or of terrestrial planets. Possible research areas include the dynamics of the Earth’s interior, dynamic processes inside planetary bodies or fundamental investigation of the field of geophysical fluid dynamics. In addition to dynamic processes in oceans or the atmosphere, possible topics also include processes in magmatic systems. In terms of methodology, the candidate’s expertise should extend to analytical and numerical modelling. We expect the candidate to cooperate closely with the research focus area of geophysics in the Faculty of Physics. Cooperation with other faculty‑based focus groups and the Center for Nonlinear Science (CeNoS) is desired. Depending on the candidate’s thematic focus, we hope the candidate would collaborate on thematically related projects in the Faculty of Geosciences as well. The candidate will be responsible for giving instruction in theoretical geophysics and will participate in the academic self-administration of the University at an appropriate level. As the courses in the bachelor’s degree programme “Geophysics” are taught in German, the candidate must possess the requisite German language skills.

To be considered for this position, the candidate must hold a university degree and possess pedagogical aptitude in university‑level teaching. Furthermore, they must hold a doctorate in a relevant subject and have academic achievements made as a Juniorprofessor (assistant professor), in a Habilitation (postdoctoral qualification), as a member of the academic staff of a university or non‑university research institute, or in a research position in business, industry, administration or other relevant field in Germany or abroad.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family‑friendly working conditions.

We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.
