We are pleased to announce the opening of applications for the STEP UP! Fellowship, a two-year program aimed at early career scientists, with the opportunity to pursue a PhD after three years. This fellowship is a collaborative initiative between the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and the Center for Earth System Observation and Computational analysis (CESOC). The fellowship will be based in Bonn, Germany.

The STEP UP! Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for young researchers to engage in innovative projects that are crucial for advancing weather prediction and climate science. We are seeking candidates who are nationals of ECMWF Member States, Co-operating States, or EU Member States and possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics, earth sciences, or a related field.
Key Research Areas:

1. Interfacing with Digital Twins
2. Generative Machine Learning (ML)
3. Investigate GNSS-R observation usage over land surface
4. Discerning the Effect of the Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS) on Flood Forecasting:
5. Using Observations to Improve Cloud and Precipitation Processes for Numerical Weather Prediction

The STEP UP! Fellowship provides a platform to work alongside leading experts in meteorology and climate science, access to cutting-edge resources, and the opportunity to contribute to significant advancements in weather forecasting. This programme is designed to foster professional growth and development, offering a competitive stipend and support for conference participation.
