Centre for Climate Resilience (CCR) at the University of Augsburg

The CCR was founded in 2020 to coordinate and unite all the resources and activities on climate resilience research, knowledge and action at the University of Augsburg. Based on interdisciplinary research, the CCR aims to develop holistic and feasible strategies for adapting to climate change. Alongside the CCR, other researchers from the University of Augsburg, particularly researchers at the Environmental Science Center (WZU) and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Health Research (CIHR), are involved as tandem partners in supervising BRaVE doctoral candidates.

The aim of the ‘Green Research Network BRaVE: Identification of Vulnerabilities, Indicators, and Implications for Actions’ is to develop interdisciplinary methods that will have a significant impact on society. These methods will identify climate-related vulnerabilities and derive quantitative or qualitative indicators for the early identification of risks. They will be used to develop sustainable solutions to mitigate these risks. The vulnerabilities addressed cover the range of disciplines represented at the CCR, in particular geoscientific, (resource) economic, logistical, medical, social, political and legal risks.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Buermann, head of chair for physical geography and climate sciences will support the PhD candidate as the co-supervisor. The PhD research is planned to be conducted on large geographic scales using quantitative data analysis and ecosystem models for the entire biosphere and agricultural systems.
The PhD candidate will receive formal and on-the-job training but it is helpful to have:

  • an interest (and possibly knowledge) in programming and working with large, also global geographical and climatological data sets,
  • an interest (and possibly experience) in processing spatial data with R or Python,
  • very good English skills, oral and in writing, including scientific writing,
  • demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high-quality research thesis.

The Centre for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg was founded at the end of 2020. The research centre is dedicated to research and science communication in the field of climate resilience with an interdisciplinary approach. The aim is to develop scientific foundations and holistic and implementable strategies at regional, national and international level that demonstrate adaptations to the unavoidable consequences of climate change.
