Job description

Context And Mission

We seek a passionate and talented Atmospheric scientist and Numeric Weather Prediction (NWP) specialist to join our team. In this role, you’ll have the chance to work in a multidisciplinary team that aims to develop methodologies and products related to risk maps as well as early warning products, with a strong focus on solving real-world problems. This position will focus on working on extreme weather events (particularly atmospheric deep convection), with some collaboration to projects related to wildfires. The methodologies that will be developed within these projects are based on a combination NWP and AI/ML. We look for someone who is a quick and willing learner, and who is not afraid to get involved and form part of a close-knit team.

Key Duties

- Specialized in predicting severe convective hazards through numerical weather modeling.

- Contribute to studying climate processes and their impact on regional and local weather patterns at various time scales.

- Collaborate on planning, designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software products with a multidisciplinary team.

- Contribute to developing and implementing catastrophe risk models for humanitarian and insurance sectors, enhancing societal resilience to natural hazards and mitigating climate change impacts.

Requirements

Education

- To have a Ph.D. degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, atmospheric physics and dynamics or any other related field.

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

- Proven track record in the study of severe convective systems and related hazards.

- Experience in NWP.

- Experience or strong interest in AI/ML tools and their application to extreme weather modelling and forecast

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

- Experience with data analysis in languages such as Python.

- Fluency in English and Spansih

Competences

- Focuses on providing excellent applied science research.

- Demonstrates inter-dependence and ownership in managing projects to completion.

- Possesses strong understanding and organizational skills with attention to detail and reliability.

Conditions

- The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department

- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
