PhD in Peatland Plant Ecology - Ecosystem connectivity restoration
Université Laval
Program:PhD in Plant Biology
Supervisor: Line Rochefort
Location: Université Laval (Quebec City, QC)
Starting date: As soon as possible
Energy, Resources and the Environment (ERE)
Project Description: Despite the recognition of the importance of restoring abrupt transitions at the edges of extracted peatlands and the surrounding natural landscape to improve connectivity with neighbouring ecosystems, these artificial ecotones have often been neglected in peatland restoration initiatives. Previous studies have suggested that partial restoration could be achieved by cutting trees along the edges, filling drainage ditches, and levelling peripheral slopes. Additionally, other research has shown that creating water bodies (pools) on slopes is an effective mechanism for restoring a natural hydrological regime, surpassing the effectiveness of berms. The recruited student will be involved in evaluating various ecotone and road restoration projects in peatlands, as well as in the development of new restoration approaches. This work will take place in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Alberta (Canada).
Qualifications required:
- Interest in peatland research and ecological restoration. -Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology, ecology, environmental science, or equivalent.
- Fieldwork experience and good tolerance to outdoor elements (heat, cold, rain, insects, etc.).
- Good level of English, basic knowledge of French, an asset.
- Valid driver’s licence in Québec province.
- Ability to work in a team.
