Description

Minerals and metals are essential to building low-carbon technologies, but they are becoming increasingly hard to find. Show your students why it’s important for marine geologists to find new metal and mineral deposits in this educational resource, which explains what cobalt, tellurium and rare earth elements are and why the search for these minerals has turned to the ocean floor. Included is a summary of a current research project, an interview with geoscientist Dr Bram Murton and a career guide for students interested in marine geoscience. The activity sheet includes discussion points – seven questions the students can answer in groups of individually –, and links to Boaty McBoatface, an autonomous
underwater vehicle.
