Günter Blöschl
The 2009 Union Service Award is awarded to Günter Blöschl in recognition of his outstanding service to the Hydrological Sciences Division and his activities in promoting the participation and proper recognition of young scientists.
Günter Blöschl is Chair of Hydrology and Water Resources Management at the Vienna University of Technology. He took a Doctorate in Hydrology (1990) and a Habilitation in Hydrology (1997) at the Vienna University of Technology. His international experience includes appointments as a research fellow in Vancouver (1989), and as a visiting fellow in Canberra (1992-1994) and Melbourne (1993, 1997).
Günter Blöschl has published 207 full papers which include 82 reviewed journal articles, 24 invited book chapters, books and special journal issues, and 101 papers in conference proceedings. His publications have been cited more than 1200 times as per the ISI data base, and the H-index is 20. He is or has been an Editor or Associate Editor of eleven major international journals in the field. He received the life membership of the International Water Academy and is Fellow of the American Geophysical Union for recognised international eminence in hydrology and water resources modelling. He is President for Water Resources Systems of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, Chair of the UNESCO Working group on climate and land use impacts on flooding, Chair of the Predictions in Ungauged Basins initiative of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences. He was President of the Hydrology Division of the European Geosciences Union. Günter Blöschl is also a member of the scientific advisory council of the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ), German’s largest research institution in the geosciences.
