Dong Wang is a PhD student at the University of Science and Technology of China, supervised by Professor Zhongqing Wu. His research combines first-principles calculations with machine learning to explore the structure and evolution of the Earth.
The work presented and awarded at EGU 2024 predicted the thermal conductivity of bridgmanite and post-perovskite using the machine learning potential trained with data from first-principles calculations. By combining mineral composition, iron content, and temperature distribution in the lower mantle, he reported a global heat flux distribution at the core-mantle boundary. The heat flux is significantly lower in the LLSVPs regions, which could significantly impact the geomagnetic field and the thermal evolution of the Earth.
