The 2024 Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Award is awarded to Daniel Boateng for the poster/PICO entitled:

African monsoon changes in the Late Cenozoic from the climate modelling perspective (Boateng, D.; Mutz, S. G.)

Daniel Boateng is a PhD researcher in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Tübingen, Germany. His research uses isotope-enabled climate models to understand paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate dynamics, including monsoon dynamics and the topographic evolution of mountains. He also employs machine learning to downscale future climate projections to the regional scale. He is dedicated to open-source scientific software development and aims to enhance the reproducibility of research outcomes.
The awarded poster at EGU presents an extensive suite of paleoclimate experiments that simulate the response of the African monsoons to various late Cenozoic paleoenvironmental forcings and feedbacks (changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration, orbital forcing, palaeogeography, vegetation, and orography) over the past ~15 million years. The findings indicate that accurate simulation of African climate variability under future climate change will require improvements in both land-atmosphere feedbacks and large-scale atmospheric dynamics in climate models.
