Veera Juntunen is a PhD candidate at the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit of the University of Oulu in Finland. Her work as a member of Space Climate Research Group focuses on Sun-driven climate variations and their influence on society’s energy consumption and production.
The study presented and awarded at EGU 2023 investigates how the influence of geomagnetic activity on Northern Annular Mode (NAM) can be seen in the wintertime electricity consumption in Finland. The results indicate that during easterly quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) phase the geomagnetic activity has a strong influence on Finland’s wintertime average temperature via the polar vortex and NAM variability. Since the wintertime electricity consumption is highly dependent on the temperature, a clear and statistically significant negative correlation is observed between the geomagnetic activity and wintertime electricity consumption in Finland.
