TS Tectonics and Structural Geology
The 2021 Virtual Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (vOSPP) Award is awarded to Pauline Gayrin for the poster/PICO entitled:
Semi-automated fault extraction and structural analysis from DEM data of the Magadi and Natron basins, East African Rift System (Gayrin, P.; Wrona, T.; Brune, S.; Riedl, S.; Hake, T.)

Pauline Gayrin is a second-year master student in the Geodynamics master in Université Grenoble-Alpes. The project presented at the vEGU is the continuation of her bachelor thesis led under the supervision of Dr. Sascha Brune and Dr. Thilo Wrona in the Geodynamic Modelling Section of the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany.
At the vEGU 2021, Pauline presented her python-based workflow to extract fault lineaments from high-resolution TanDEM-X topographic data of the Magadi-Natron Basin within the East African Rift System. The structural analysis automatically deduces key fault parameters such as fault azimuth, throw, and heave of hundreds of rift faults and thereby quantifies the patterns of neotectonic activity in that region.
