The 2019 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Ángela María Gómez García for the poster/PICO entitled:

Crustal structure of the Lesser and Leeward Antilles forearcs inferred from satellite Vertical Gravity Gradients (Gómez García, A. M.; Meeßen, C.; Scheck-Wenderoth, M.; Monsalve, G.; Bott, J.; Bernhardt, A.; Bernal, G.)

Ángela María Gómez García is a PhD candidate at the National University of Colombia and a guest researcher at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences (Potsdam) and the Freie Universität of Berlin, Germany. Her current research line is the study of the oceanic lithosphere using innovative techniques such as satellite vertical gravity gradients, by means of the forward modelling of 3D density and structural models. She is also applying these 3D lithospheric models to the evaluation of temperature distributions in the lithosphere, aiming to understand potential geohazards such as earthquakes and the stability zone of gas hydrates in seafloor sediments.
The awarded poster focuses on the application of a new methodology for characterising the oceanic crust. It presents the detailed results of a case study, on the structure of the Lesser and Leeward Antilles. With this novel approach, it is possible to refine, propose or confirm tectonic boundaries in marine environments, where direct measurements are limited. Moreover, this method, which relies on globally available datasets, can be applied in a straightforward way to any other region.
