Andreas Riedl is a Ph.D. student in the Grassland Sciences Group at ETH Zürich, Switzerland under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Werner Eugster and Prof. Dr. Nina Buchmann. His research focuses on the quantification of dew and fog water inputs to Swiss grasslands and the interaction of dew and fog water with plants of temperate grassland ecosystems. The awarded poster presents a custom-made high accuracy weighing lysimeter system, that allows to accurately measure small weight gains caused by dew formation and by fog droplet deposition under field conditions.
Dew and fog water molecules enter plants by foliar water uptake and increase thereby the plant water content and plant water status. The poster shows the effect of frequent dew formation on biomass production of a grassland.
The poster shows furthermore an innovative approach to deliver environmental data from remote areas by using an Internet of Things technology called LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network).
