The 2016 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Christoph Renkl for the poster/PICO entitled:

The Alongshore Tilt of Mean Dynamic Topography and Implications for Nearshore Circulation and Regional Vorticity Balance. (Renkl, C.; Thompson, K. R.)

Christoph Renkl is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. His current research focuses on the link between the nearshore and offshore ocean circulation. Using a high-resolution ocean model and observations from tide gauges in combinations with the latest generation of geoid models, he investigates the role of the alongshore tilt of mean dynamic topography (MDT) and its potential for monitoring the nearshore and shelf circulation from the coast.
The presented poster shows first results of the representation and sensitivity of the alongshore tilt of MDT in the model as well as an analysis of the alongshore momentum balance. A preliminary interpretation based on vorticity dynamics is used to relate the alongshore tilt to the nearshore and offshore ocean circulation.
