Benedikt Ehard is a PhD student at the Institute for Atmospheric Physics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen. He is investigating gravity waves in the middle atmosphere by lidar studies. For the poster he presented at the EGU lidar measurements in the stratosphere were combined with mesoscale simulations below. This opened the possibility to study a wave breaking event, where part of the wave activity penetrated through the breaking region. By combining simulations and measurements, the observed wave was identified to be a mountain wave.
