Moussa Waongo is a PhD student at the Institute of Geography, Regional climate and Hydrology, University of Augsburg as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (KIT/IMK-IFU), Germany. His supervisors are Dr. Patrick Laux and Prof. Dr. Harald Kunstmann. His research investigates how to optimize crop planting dates in order to support agriculture decision-making in the context of climate change in water-limited regions in West Africa.
His poster at EGU 2014 describes a new approach for planting date optimization and shows key results about the impacts of optimized planting dates (OPDs) on maize productivity in Burkina Faso. Using present climate and future climate change projections in combination with a process-based crop model, this work shows that OPDs are able to achieve higher potential maize yields in comparison to a planting date approach currently in use in West Africa.
