Men-Andrin Meier is a PhD student with the Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His PhD project focuses on the development of algorithms that reliably detect and characterise ongoing earthquakes in real-time. In his poster at EGU 2014 he presents a novel approach to real-time magnitude and source/station distance estimation, based on single three component seismic records. The approach uses a filter bank to maximally exploit the broad-band frequency content of seismic records. The poster demonstrates the potential of the approach to reduce the blind zone size of current earthquake early warning systems.
