The 2014 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Malte Rieck for the poster/PICO entitled:
The influence of land-surface heterogeneities on cloud size development (Rieck, M.; Hohenegger, C.; van Heerwaarden C. C.)
Malte Rieck is a PhD student at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany. He is investigating the interaction between land surfaces and moist convection. His EGU poster presents the first part of his PhD where the development of convective clouds is modeled over heterogeneous land surfaces. Numerical simulations reveal that clouds grow faster and precipitate earlier and stronger when the surface is patchy. The maximum size a cloud can reach increases with the size of the underlying surface patch. The observed effects are not represented in current weather and climate models.
