The 2013 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Thomas Seers for the poster/PICO entitled:

Comparison of Digital Outcrop and Conventional Approaches to the Characterization of Naturally Fractured Reservoir Analogues (Seers, T.; Hodgetts, D.)

Thomas Seers is a PhD candidate within the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Manchester, UK, working under the supervision of Dr David Hodgetts. Thomas’s work focuses upon the development and application of digital data capture and analysis techniques the characterisation of flow heterogeneity within clastic reservoir analogues at disparate scales (pore to reservoir unit scale). The nominated poster presents the findings of a study which aims to validate and calibrate terrestrial lidar based digital fracture analysis techniques through comparison with an equivalent manually collected dataset. Whilst broadly comparable to fracture attributes obtained using manual surveys, the systematic underrepresentation of fracture properties is observed within lidar derived dataset, resulting in the underestimation of flow and storage capacity within modelled discrete fracture networks.
