Ivy Frenger completed her Ph.D. in February 2013 at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, under the supervision of Nicolas Gruber, Matthias Münnich and Reto Knutti. Her research interest is in the components of the climate system and their interactions. The focus of her dissertation was oceanic eddies of scales of the order of 100 km and their local impact on the atmosphere and ocean biology. The poster presented at the EGU General Assembly 2013 demonstrates that sea surface temperature anomalies associated with eddies significantly impact winds, clouds and rainfall south of 30ºS. Hence, ocean eddies affect the much larger atmospheric low pressure systems that swiftly pass at these latitudes and give rise to highly variable weather conditions.
