The 2011 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Robert Myhill for the poster/PICO entitled:

Robert Myhill is a PhD student at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Dan McKenzie and Keith Priestley. He is a seismologist working on the behaviour of deep earthquakes, which occur up to 700 km beneath the Earth’s surface. Deep earthquakes represent a poorly understood means of brittle failure at high pressure. Although deep earthquakes are thought to occur within material which is colder than the ambient mantle, the distributions are inconsistent with purely thermal controls. In determining the relationships between deep earthquakes and the local conditions, we improve our understanding of the earthquakes themselves, and also of mantle rheology and deep Earth geodynamics.
