The 2011 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Patrick Klenk for the poster/PICO entitled:
Towards reliable large scale soil water content estimation: GPR for measuring soil moisture in the Urumqi region (Klenk, P.; Qin, Y.; Zhou, K.; Zhang, J.; Roth, K.)

Patrick Klenk is a PhD student at the Institute of Environmental Physics, Heidelberg University, supervised by Kurt Roth. His research interest currently focuses on geophysical measurements of near-surface soil water contents, mainly using electromagnetic methods like Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), while seeking a link to large-scale remote sensing methods. For more information, please refer to http://science.pklenk.de.
The awarded poster discusses two exemplary datasets of GPR derived soil moisture contents from a recent field campaign to a semi-arid region in Northwestern China. The central aim of this poster was to stimulate a discourse about the efficacy of these data sets for current remote sensing retrieval schemes, e.g. for providing field-scale ground truth or as sub-pixel information for larger scale remote sensing methods.
