CL Climate: Past, Present & Future
The 2011 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Niklaus Merz for the poster/PICO entitled:
Regional links between atmospheric variability and the sea-ice – ocean system in the Southern Ocean area (Merz, N.; Wilmes, S.-B.; Sedlacek, J.; Raible, C. C.; Knutti, R.)

Currently, Niklaus Merz is a PhD student at the University of Bern(Switzerland) working on changes in the atmospheric circulation during interglacial periods. On the EGU 2011 poster he presents his master thesis written at the ETH Zurich under the supervision of Jan Sedlacek and Reto Knutti, where he investigated the importance of the atmospheric variability, e.g., the Southern Annular Mode, on the Southern Hemisphere sea-ice. The poster discusses some interesting features found in reanalysis data of the last 30 years and compares it with the output of a comprehensive climate model (NCAR CCSM3).
