I am a PhD student in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics group at ETH Zurich. In my PhD project, which is part of the Crystal2Plate project, I investigate the influence of several mechanisms on lithospheric-scale shear localization. In my poster, I present results from twodimensional numerical models which show that shear heating (deformational work converted to temperature) is capable of creating lithospheric-scale shear zones. I also show that not every shear zone results in a subduction zone. Using 1D models, I can predict the onset of localization due to shear heating.
