Heli Hietala is a PhD student at the Department of Physics, University of Helsinki, Finland, under the supervision of Prof. Hannu Koskinen and Dr. Rami Vainio. She studies quasi-parallel space plasma shocks, i.e., shock waves where the upstream magnetic field is aligned with the shock normal, and the sheath region behind the shock. The poster at the EGU General Assembly 2011 presented an analysis of the different phases of particle acceleration as an interplanetary shock approached, and eventually collided with the bow shock of the Earth.
