The 2010 Young Scientist Outstanding Poster Paper (YSOPP) Award is awarded to András Zlinszky for the poster/PICO entitled:
First, Second and Third Habsburg Military Surveys: documents of the transition of Lake Balaton from natural to artificial hydrologic regime (Zlinszky, A.)
András Zlinszky is a PhD student at the Balaton Limnological Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, supervised by Sándor Herodek. As a wetland ecologist, his work focuses on the ecological history of the wetlands in and around lake Balaton, Hungary. His poster deals with the georeferencing and processing of several historic map series from the 18th and 19th century in order to track changes in the network of lakes and wetlands on the scale of the whole watershed (5700 km2). Conclusions show that the loss of wetlands around the lake was not a consequence of artificial drainage of the lake itself as previously known, instead, the canalization of the wetlands upstream was a cause of the destabilization and drop of the lake water level.
