The 2016 Division Outstanding Young Scientist Award is awarded to Jackie E. Kendrick for an outstanding early career contribution to seismogenic processes and frictional melting in shallow magmatic conduits.

Jackie Kendrick has produced 13 peer-reviewed articles, the majority of which in the brief time since being awarded her PhD in 2013 from the Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich. Perhaps the most significant of these works is a first-author paper in Nature Geoscience entitled ‘Volcanic drumbeat seismicity caused by stick-slip motion and magmatic frictional melting’. This ground-breaking study highlighted the key role of frictional melting in magmatic conduits, a process which may have far-reaching implications. Kendrick’s highly productive and high quality research trajectory merits recognition. By awarding her this year’s GMPV Division Outstanding Young Scientists award we acknowledge a new rising star in the geosciences.
