The 2025 Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award is awarded to Katerina Georgiou for significant contributions to the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of carbon cycling at a range of scales; from soil particle to field-scale, to global predictions.

Katerina Georgiou’s work has made significant contributions to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of carbon cycling and how to scale them up, from soil particle to field-scale to global predictions. Her work reveals new developments in both the theory and mathematical representations of biogeochemical reaction networks in the soil environment, where microbes and enzymes interact with mineral surfaces and plant roots. Through exceptionally strong skills in numerical methods and training in chemical engineering and soil biogeochemistry, she has forged a path to addressing this longstanding challenge, changing our global maps of mineral-associated (stabilized) carbon, its vulnerability to land use change and warming temperatures, and carbon sequestration potential.

In addition to scholarly excellence, Katerina Georgiou is an active EGU volunteer and engaged member of the EGU scientific community.
