Evangelos Moulas
GMPV Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology & Volcanology
The 2019 Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award is awarded to Evangelos Moulas for his research on understanding and quantifying the dynamic coupling of rock mechanics, solid state diffusion and metamorphic reactions.
Evangelos Moulas is awarded the 2019 GMPV Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award for his research, which builds from the study of chemical transformation of rocks to structural geology, tectonics and geodynamics. The outstanding feature of Moulas is that he masters the continuum mechanics and thermodynamic theory, the required analytical and numerical methods to solve the associated partial differential equations as well as the petrological and geochemical data and field work. This capacity allows him to develop new and innovative solutions and to be a key researcher in multidisciplinary research projects, which combine numerical modeling, analogue experiments, phase equilibria modelling, microanalysis and field work. Moulas is also actively co-supervising several PhD students and enthusiastically participating in classroom lectures and field camps. His multidisciplinary knowledge is of greatest value for teaching Bachelor and Master students the complex interactions and feed-backs of geological and petrological processes. With his broad and multidisciplinary knowledge, Evangelos Moulas builds scientific bridges between disciplines, and these bridges are essential to advance the Earth sciences.
