Giuliano Di Baldassarre
HS Hydrological Sciences
The 2012 Division Outstanding Young Scientist Award is awarded to Giuliano Di Baldassarre for his remarkable contribution to understanding and communicating the impact of global changes on flood risk.
Giuliano Di Baldassarre’s research focuses on the calibration and validation of inundation models for estimating flooded areas based on the efficient use of remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems. He particularly focuses on the impact of changes, i.e. land use change and/or climate change, on flood risk. He has developed innovative methods in the field of rainfall-runoff modeling, uncertainty estimation, numerical inundation modeling and efficient use of remote sensing techniques. Di Baldassarre participates and leads several projects in Europe and Africa (Nile Basin) and puts his research contribution in a development context. Finally, Di Baldassarre’s research has contributed to our ability to make better estimations of flood risks and to better communicate hydrological risks in the context of global change to society.
