EGU is funding 24 training schools and member-organised topical conferences in 2026

4 February 2026

EGU today announces the 16 training schools, 6 events in our conference series in the Earth, planetary and space sciences, and two Galileo Conference events, for which we will provide financial support in 2026. These events are proposed by EGU members from all career stages, and will be hosted in locations all over the world.

EGU volunteers in the Topical Events Committee have selected 16 training schools to be organised and run by Early Career Scientists in 2026, which cover a wide variety of geoscience topics. EGU provides funding with the primary aim of facilitating participation of Early Career Scientists; supporting more diverse access to these events and their promotion to the EGU community. Over the last few years EGU has been pleased to support a diverse range of training schools, which offer Early Career Scientists specialist training opportunities that they normally don’t have access to at their home institutions, and conferences, which encourage sustained dialogue within specialist research communities. Funding for the training schools was increased in 2024 to 6000€, and funding for the conference series’ has also increased to 8000€ (with the possibility of some specialist costs allocated for the conference series and Galileo conferences).

The EGU conference series reflects a range of specialised topics that run on an annual or bi-annual schedule. Each year, the best proposal that fits within the specialised theme of the conference is selected by the Topical Events Committee members and funded by EGU, to allow those sections of our community to deepen their relationships outside the annual General Assembly. The full list of conferences covered by the EGU Conference Series is listed on the Conference Series webpage.

This year the EGU will also fund the delivery of two Galileo Conferences, which address well-focused, cutting-edge topics at the frontier of geosciences research. The successful proposals for 2026 were for the 'Fibre Optic Sensing in Geosciences' meeting, which will take place between 31 August and 4 September 2026 in the Rhône Alpes in France, and the 'Shaking Boundaries: Environmental Seismology Across Disciplines and Methods' meeting, which will take place in Kiel, Germany between 9-12 June 2026.

The full list of training schools and conference series funded for delivery in 2026 are as follows:

More information

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is Europe’s premier geosciences union, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences for the benefit of humanity, worldwide. It is a non-profit interdisciplinary learned association of scientists and researchers founded in 2002 with headquarters in Munich, Germany. The EGU publishes a number of diverse scientific journals that use an innovative public peer-review, open access format, and organises many topical meetings, as well as education and outreach activities. Its annual General Assembly is the largest and most prominent European geosciences event, attracting more than 20,000 scientists from all over the world. The meeting’s sessions cover a wide range of topics, including volcanology, planetary exploration, the Earth’s internal structure and atmosphere, climate, energy, and resources.
