Mentoring 101 and the EGU22 mentoring scheme

The benefits of mentoring for students, Early Career Scientists (ECS) and those looking to progress in their careers are numerous. In fact, in some studies, mentoring was found to be the most important factor for completing a degree in the science, technology, maths and engineering (STEM) fields (Woolston, 2019). However, opportunities for accessing a mentor and being adequately trained in how to mentor are often lacking.

Each year, at the EGU general assembly, a mentoring scheme is offered, to partner first-time attendees with EGU members who have previously attended the conference. Whilst guidelines are normally provided for mentors and mentees who sign up to the scheme, feedback has highlighted the need for more information on who can be a mentor, what the mentee can expect from the scheme, and how much time and effort is required on both sides. In this webinar, you will hear from the organisers of the mentoring scheme, as well as previous mentees and mentors. They will provide guidance, advice and suggestions to assist your mentoring experience.

Speaking at this webinar will be:

Solmaz Mohadjer, Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Central Asia and lead for the EGU 2022 General Assembly Mentoring Scheme,

Adhithiyan Neduncheran, researcher at Sapienza Università di Roma and Early Career Scientist blog editor for the Planetary Sciences Division,

Stephanie Zihms, Lecturer in Researcher Development at the University of the West of Scotland and previous Union Level Early Career Scientist representative

Lena Noack, Professor at Freie Universität Berlin and coordinator for the EGU Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Awards
