The EGU General Assembly has been notable for attracting early career scientists (ECS) from not just the European Union, but from all parts of the world. In recent years, this has also been reflected in the number of ECS globally joining institutes in the EU for research. For first-timers, this can be daunting to navigate the challenges arising in a new research environment.

This webinar series, "Careers Across Borders", will inform ECS who are planning to, or who have just begun to transition to the EU, on the various resources available as well as tips to effectively collaborate. Additionally, we also present experiences on how various ECS tackled challenges and gained networks and mental support. The target audience is both EU and international ECS, especially PhD candidates and post-doc researchers.

The second part provide insights into building effective collaborations and will feature experiences of ECS that have already navigated the challenges, providing tips on mental health support, work-life balance and effective resources to understand bureaucracy. The complements part one of this series, which focused on academic career prospects and managing mobility for researchers moving internationally to and within the European Union.

Conveners:

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology and Palaeontology Division.

Host:

Valentini Navrozidou.

Speaker:

Dr. Anupama Kuttikkat Xavier (Research Associate at the University Of Bristol, UK) is a climate scientist and Research Associate at the University Of Bristol, UK. Originally from India, she earned her PhD in Meteorology from UC Louvain, Belgium, through the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme. Her international research experience spans India, Belgium, the UK, France, and Israel, focusing on climate dynamics, extreme weather, and climate change. She is also actively involved in international scientific collaborations, early-career researcher initiatives, and science outreach.

Dr. Elizabeth Dowding (Zoology at the University of New England, Anaiwan Country, Australia) is a biogeographer and Lecturer. Dr. Dowding is interested in the spatial structure of diversity and working towards unified frameworks for describing eco-evolutionary units: bioregions. Beginning on Dharawal Country, Australia, Dr. Dowding took postdocs in Norway and Germany, fought time zones to build up an international collaborative community and has recently returned home to Australia.

Dr. Mozhgan Amiramjadi (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. Her research focuses on applying artificial intelligence to climate and environmental sciences. She completed her PhD at the University Of Tehran, Iran. She has served as the EGU Atmospheric Sciences (AS) Early Career Scientist Representative since 2026.

Dr. Olga Schmitz (MPI of Geoanthropology, Jena, Germany) is a micropaleontologist and postdoc at MPI of Geoanthropology, Jena, Germany, holding a PhD in environmental micropaleontology from FSU Jena. Her research
across Germany, Africa, Tibet, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan uses ostracods and foraminifera to study environmental change and human impacts. She co-chairs the ICDP Early Career Network Steering Committee and received the 2025 IPA Early Career Researcher Award.
