EGU2020: Sharing Geoscience Online — by the numbers

13 May 2020

The statistics from EGU 2020 clearly demonstrate that EGU members, and many other people around the world, are eager to learn about the latest geoscience research results.

By the numbers, the week of Sharing Geoscience Online included:

• 701 scientific sessions
• 26,219 individual chat registrations from 134 countries
• 18,036 abstracts, 63% of which had uploaded presentation materials
• An average of 8,730 text chat participants per day on average, with a maximum of 9,930
• A peak of 5,090 participants simultaneously active in chats
• A median of 92 participants per chat and a maximum of 796
• 200,400 total messages posted, with a daily average of 40,080
• 6,297 comments made on presentation materials through Friday 8 May
• 6 Short Courses, including one live session
• 10 livestreamed Union Symposia and Great Debates and 3 virtual press conferences
• 44 networking, feedback, or townhall sessions

Fortunately, even though Sharing Geoscience Online is over, the scientific discourse can continue. All of the abstracts and presentation materials will be permanently archived, and EGU members can use their Copernicus IDs to add additional comments and replies until 31 May.

People from around the world can also access all of the livestreamed events, including the ten Union Symposia and Great Debates and three press conferences, for free at any time via EGU’s YouTube channel. The six Short Courses are also available for free viewing on the same channel.
