Join us on the first Monday of every month to discuss how researchers can more effectively engage with policymaking, get the scoop on upcoming science for policy opportunities, and virtually mingle in a relaxed, informal environment. You’ll be met with people working at the science-policy interface as well as others who may be interested in doing so!

This month, we will be hosting Adam Izdebski, an interdisciplinary historian and human ecologist. He is a Professor of Human Ecology at the Institute of Advanced Studies of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. In 2018-2025, he was leading an independent research group in environmental history at the Max Planck Institute of Science of Human History / Geoanthropology in Jena, Germany. Adam's research interests cover climate change, pandemics, biodiversity, and the interaction of economic development and ecological dynamics in the Late Holocene. He was a member of EGU's previous Biodiversity Task Force that contributed to the EU Nature Restoration Law.

Currently, Adam is the Chair of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the European Commission which is part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM). The role of the Group is to make policy recommendations based on the evidence gathered by SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies). In this month's Hangout, Adam will talk about his current role within the Group as well as insights into how they provide advice to the Commission.
